Sydney Sweeney Reflects on Playing a Morally Questionable Character

Sydney Sweeney shared her process on connecting with a character who makes morally questionable decisions.
“I think it’s important as an actor to find empathy for your character even if you don’t agree with all their choices,” Sweeney told Variety on Tuesday, December 2, while on the red carpet for the New York City premiere of her new movie, The Housemaid. “It’s complex but that’s where you find the vulnerability in that person.”
Sweeney stars in the new thriller, based on the 2022 Freida McFadden novel of the same name, which hits theaters Friday, December 19. Sweeny plays Millie Calloway, a live-in maid hired by a wealthy family. After spending time with her affluent employers, Millie learns their lives are not as picture perfect as they make it seem. The cast also includes Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone and Elizabeth Perkins.
“That’s our job to find every single layer to a person whether we believe or agree with it or not,” Sweeney continued.
Sydney Sweeney was overcome with emotion while celebrating the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Christy. “Christy, you are absolutely incredible, and I’m so honored. I’m gonna cry! Oh my God, you’re so inspirational,” Sweeney. 27, said on Friday, September 5, per Variety. “And so being able to have her by my side during this […]
Sweeney was joined by her The Housemaid costars for the red carpet event. The Euphoria actress stunned in a shimmery silver custom Miu Miu gown. She completed the look with a glamorous white feathered boa.
Seyfried and Sweeney were all smiles as they posed together. Seyfried donned a baby pink Versace by Dario Vitale gown paired with chunky jewelry.
While speaking to Variety, Sweeney gushed about getting to work alongside Seyfried and the friendship they formed.
“Amanda and I became sisters. She was the bestest friend ever,” Sweeney also told the outlet on the red carpet. “We have so much fun together, and I actually think that when you have a scene partner and actor that you can have fun with and you feel safe with and free, it actually makes those kinds of scenes even better.”
This past year, Sweeney has portrayed a variety of complex characters. She recently starred in the Christy Martin biopic, playing the legendary female boxer. To portray the iconic athlete, Sweeney underwent a physical transformation where she gained 30 pounds and trained daily.

Sydney Sweeney’s Euphoria character, Cassie, has been through it during the HBO hit’s two seasons, yet the actress still hears the most chatter about her body. “It’s fascinating to see how I play a character that gets judged and thrown around and talked about because of her body,” Sweeney, 27, told The Times of London […]
“I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she told W magazine in an interview published in June. “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
Sweeney also had roles in the films Eden and Echo Valley which premiered earlier this year. In a sitdown with Variety, Sweeney reflected on the various roles she’s taken on throughout her career.
“I play a lot of very divisive characters,” Sweeney told the outlet in an October interview. “And I think that a lot of people think they know me, but they don’t. So when people think, ‘Ah, she’s a sex symbol,’ or, ‘She’s leaning into that,’ I’m like, ‘No, I just feel good and I’m doing it for myself and I feel strong.’ And I hope that I can inspire other women to be confident and just flaunt what they got and feel good because you shouldn’t have to apologize or hide or cover up in any room.”
