Highlights:

The Philippines is an archipelago of over seven thousand islands. The third-largest, Coron Island, lies south-west of the capital of Manila and is known for its natural beauty, crystal clear water and amazing marine life. Lincoln signed up for an island hopping day tour from Coron township to explore the tropical paradise.

Just 20 minutes by boat the first stop was the breathtaking Kayangan Lake, accessed via a steep stone staircase from the wharf. Considered the cleanest and clearest lake in all of the Philippines, it is sacred to the Tagbanwa people that maintain it as a tourist attraction. With underground connections to the sea, it’s a mix of 70% freshwater and 30% saltwater, Lincoln says swimming in it feels as good as it looks!

Coron Island is also known for its wreck dives, with a Japanese supply fleet sunk by the US during WW2. Skeleton wreck is easily accessed from boat or shore as the depth at one end is just 5 metres. Named after the look of the wreck, not real skeletons, with calm waters and high visibility, it’s a thriving artificial reef that is ideal for snorkelling or beginner divers.

Off to the next destination, and Lincoln barely had time to get dry before he jumped back in the water to snorkel amongst fish of every colour at Coral Gardens. It was hard to pick what was more spectacular, the scenery above or below the surface, so exploring in a see-through kayak was the best way to go. Making his way through lagoons and coves of crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by tall limestone cliffs was like discovering a hidden world.

In just one day, Lincoln got to see so many of Coron Island’s highlights, from snorkelling a shipwreck to swimming in the clearest waters in the country, and then kayaking past ancient limestone cliffs. It was the Philippines he’d seen in photos and online, and it really lived up to the hype.
