Winter weather arrives with snow and sleet in parts of NY, NJ and CT

NEW JERSEY (WABC) — The storm swept through the Tri-State area, leaving roads and sidewalks coated with slushy snow north and west of the city, and creating plenty of work for local crews and residents alike.
Some schools in New York and New Jersey closed or delayed opening as snow and rain made conditions slippery.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for several counties in the northwestern part of the state “due to a potentially significant winter storm causing hazardous weather conditions.”
The Department of Public Works (DPW) led lines of traffic as teams worked diligently to clear major roads, ensuring safe passage for drivers.
In the heart of Newton, New Jersey, the aftermath of the storm was evident, with both public workers and residents pitching in to clear pathways. Hardware stores became essential stops for many, with one spot in Sparta nearly selling out of supplies as people prepared for the weather.
In Orange County, New York, hazardous conditions led to cars spinning out on Route 17, which quickly became a slippery mess. Both private operators and highway crews prioritized snow removal, using everything from heavy-duty machinery in hospital parking lots to plows mounted on pickup trucks.
The city of Middletown faced a significant task, with 230 lane miles to plow. DPW Commissioner Jacob Tawil emphasized the importance of public cooperation:
“We always urge people to stay home, especially during the first snow, to allow us to clean the roads and make them safe. This way everyone will be better off,” Tawil said.
For residents, the snow meant extra work as well, whether using a snow blower or a trusty shovel.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also advised residents in parts of upstate New York to prepare for the state’s first major snowfall.
“State agencies stand ready to assist New Yorkers throughout the storm, and our plow crews will be out keeping our roadways safe, but we encourage everyone to be weather aware and closely monitor the forecast,” she said in a statement.
Six or more inches of snow were forecast in some parts of the state.
