‘That’s Jonty Rhodes-like’: Aussie back-up keeper stuns with ‘fluke’ run-out of Stokes

Recalled Aussie Test star Josh Inglis has channelled the great Jonty Rhodes in coming up with a stunning run-out of England captain Ben Stokes to turn the second Ashes Test on day one.
With England in control at 4-210 in the third session at The Gabba, Stokes pushed a ball to the off-side and called Joe Root through for an audacious single.
However, Root sent his captain back after he was halfway down the pitch, giving Inglis one stump to aim at and he picked the ball up with one hand and threw down the stumps before being mobbed by teammates.

Stokes looked on in agony before turning to his partner at the non-striker’s end in disbelief and he had to depart for a gritty 19 off 49 balls.
Mark Howard summed up the chaotic turn of events in commentary.
“That is brilliant from Inglis,” Howard said on Fox Cricket
“That’s the one the Aussies wanted the England captain departs and Inglis is into the action.”
England great Michael Vaughan was as shocked as Stokes with a run-out that came out of absolutely nowhere.
“Can you believe it?” Vaughan said.
“They were in control and it’s brilliant from Inglis he had one stump to aim at. I don’t think there was a single. There wasn’t one.
“How often do we see Australia do this? It was a great pick-up because it just bounced before him and he got it in his hands and steadied himself and with a little flick of the wrist, brilliant from Australia.”

David Warner summed up how good the run-out was from a man who is usually fielding with the gloves behind the stumps and compared it to one of the games greatest fielders from South Africa.
“He would not have practised this too often being a wicket-keeper, that’s Jonty Rhodes-like,” Warner said.

Compounding the error was the fact Jamie Smith followed soon after for a duck as England slumped to 6-211 after losing two wickets for just one run in the space of four balls.
“How often in Test cricket do you see a mistake and then another quick wicket follows,” Vaughan added.

Inglis admitted the run-out was more arse than class in an on-field interview with Adam Gilchrist.
“It was an absolute fluke Gilly you know that,” Inglis said.
“I have had to do a bit of fielding being around the squad the last couple of years, so not I haven’t done heaps, but enough.”
