NHS Ayrshire and Arran has confirmed that routine hospital visits have been suspended due to a “sharp rise” in viral respiratory infections.
It comes as the number of flu hospital admissions in Scotland has surged by 70% in the last week, with the number of confirmed cases more than doubling.
Hospital admissions rose from 426 to 724 between November 24 to 30, while laboratory-confirmed flu cases rose from 845 to 1,759, Public Health Scotland (PSH) figures show.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran say the rise in cases has placed hospitals in the region are under “significant pressures”.
The health board has confirmed that they will only be supporting essential visits.
Jennifer Wilson, nurse director, said: “Due to the increase in flu and other respiratory infections, and the high demand on hospital services, we must limit visiting to keep everyone safe. We know this is hard, especially at this time of year and we truly appreciate your understanding.
“We recognise how important contact with loved ones is. Our teams will support patients and families to stay connected.”
The situation will be reviewed on a daily basis.
