Manchester United players taking social media jabs at their managers has become a semi-regular occurrence.

Patrick Dorgu is the latest United star who has been unable to resist a dig at his boss after ‘liking’ an Instagram post that questioned Ruben Amorim’s tactics last month. Dorgu was left out of the starting line-up for Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, a decision Amorim insisted was purely based on football reasons, pointing out the Dane’s recent nervousness on the ball.

He said: “He needs to be calmer playing the game. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touched the ball. I can feel it, the anxiety.”

Regardless of the reasons behind Dorgu’s omission, such gestures from players towards their managers are at best unhelpful and at worst divisive. However, this is not uncharted territory for a United boss.

Alejandro Garnacho found himself in a similar situation with Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, after he ‘liked’ a post on X criticising the Dutch boss for substituting him during half-time in United’s 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in the 2023/24 season.

Ten Hag downplayed the incident but confirmed that the player had apologised. He said: “Alejandro is a young player, he has to learn a lot. He apologised for it and after that we move on.”

However, Garnacho either didn’t learn from his mistake or simply didn’t care when he criticised Amorim’s decision to start him on the bench for last season’s Europa League final against Tottenham.

Seemingly aware his United career was drawing to a close, he vented his frustration in a post-match interview, saying: “Up until the final, I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don’t know.

“The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.”

Making matters worse, Garnacho’s brother and agent, Roberto, backed his sentiments with a sharp social media post. He wrote on Instagram: “Working as no-one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus. Wowe hahahahahaha.”

It came as little surprise to anyone when Garnacho departed for Chelsea in a £40million transfer during the summer. While the Argentine has found it difficult to cement his place in the starting XI, he’s now part of a Blues squad that appears capable of mounting a title challenge.

Meanwhile, Amorim continues to search for consistency at United, with the 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton and the impressive 2-1 victory at Palace encapsulating their campaign so far. United host West Ham on Thursday.
