Search underway near Loveland for missing Evans woman

Family and friends of a missing Evans woman fanned out Thursday across the region to search for her.

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, a car matching the description of the vehicle Kaylee Russell was last seen in had been found in Weld County, but officials on scene had not yet confirmed whether it was Russell’s, according to a family member at the scene who spoke with the Reporter-Herald.

Russell, 20, was last seen Nov. 30 at 6 p.m., according to a missing person alert from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, near the Loveland/Johnstown Park-N-Ride. She was wearing a black hoodie, tan pants and brown slippers and driving a 2016 black Volkswagen Tiguan, Colorado temporary license plate number 7880903.

The young woman was on her route as a package delivery driver on Saturday, accompanied by her father, Berthoud resident Richard Russell. She completed her route, and her father helped her fix a broken headlight and replace a tire on her vehicle with a spare. After finishing her deliveries for the day, she returned to the Loveland Park-N-Ride, where her father was parked, dropped him off and departed for a friend’s house in Pierce.

Her father called her cellphone shortly after, around 6:10 p.m., to ensure that her headlights were in working order and spoke with her briefly, the last contact anyone had with Russell before her disappearance.

Since then, family and friends, including her mother Rebecca Russell, who traveled from Kansas to help, have been searching for Kaylee Russell’s car along Weld County Road 13, the route her father recommended to get to her friend’s house, as well as parking lots throughout the region, including at Centerra, Medical Center of the Rockies and various hotels.

“I’m numb,” said Rebecca Russell, at the Loveland Park-N-Ride as search parties were organized and sent to various unsearched areas throughout the region. “Numb, and sometimes I break down crying. I’m scared. So, so scared.”

“Somebody had to see something,” she continued. “I don’t understand why nobody’s come forward with anything. It’s like she disappeared off the face of the earth. Where’s her car?”

Evans Police Department is leading the investigation and the search for Kaylee Russell, with help from CBI and other local police forces.

The Loveland Police Department encourages all travelers and commuters to be alert and keep an eye out for Russell while traveling.

CBI instructed anyone who sees Russell or her vehicle, or who has information regarding her whereabouts, to call either the Evans Police Department at 970-350-9600 or 911.

According to Loveland police spokesperson Chris Padgett, the Evans Police Department nonemergency number should be called unless Russell is seen and appears to be in distress, in which case 911 should be called. If anyone has information but doesn’t have the Evans police nonemergency number at hand, 911 can be called instead.

“The main thing is that we don’t want people to simply take these things for granted, or assume that somebody already knows,” he continued. “In cases like this, especially with inclement weather and several days that have passed, every single piece of information helps to be a building block in the investigation. Even if the information is minute, let the investigators sift through that.”

Russell’s father Richard was at a loss for words Thursday, pacing about anxiously as he waited for a search party to be organized so that he could get back on the road looking for his daughter.

“I just don’t know,” he said. “I have no idea.”

Rescue crews from several law enforcement agencies sent divers into a pond near Russell’s last known location and did not find a vehicle underwater, according to social media posts from multiple agencies.
