Legendary Australian musician Ted Egan has died at the age of 93.

Egan passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, leaving behind a mammoth legacy across not only his music career but also in politics.

Born in Coburg, Victoria, in 1932, Egan went on to release 30 albums touching on themes of life in the Outback and Indigenous issues.

His successful music career led to him being appointed as Administrator of the Northern Territory from 2003-2007.

It has sparked a wave of tributes from across all walks of life, including the Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn.

“Ted was an outback storyteller, a proud champion of the land he loved, and a dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights,” Mostyn said.

“Through his decades of service as a patrol officer, teacher, and advocate for Aboriginal people, he brought a deep understanding of the Territory’s outback, its communities and its culture to his role as Administrator.

“He leaves behind a legacy of profound kindness, courage, and connection.”

Egan is survived by his wife Nerys Evans.
