Louisville’s Jeff Walz talks impact of former UofL players
After facing Monique Reid’s Bellarmine Knights on Nov. 30, Louisville’s Jeff Walz said he enjoys watching his former players thrive in their current roles.
Louisville women’s basketball has gone 0-2 against ranked opponents so far this season with losses to No. 16 Kentucky and top-ranked UConn. The No. 21-ranked Cardinals will try to change that trend tonight when third-ranked South Carolina comes to town for the ACC/SEC Challenge. So far, the SEC is winning the series, 2-5, with nine games to be played tonight.
It’ll be a tall task: Louisville has only ever beaten South Carolina four times with its most recent win having been via a 74-47 decision in 1991. The two programs have only played twice since: during the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge in 2016 and the 2022 Final Four. The Gamecocks had A’ja Wilson and the Cards had a solid trio of Mariya Moore, Asia “AD” Durr and Myisha Hines-Allen, who was the ACC’s Player of the Year as a sophomore, during the 2016 meeting.

Both teams are shooting 54% from the field with only one turnover apiece, though the Gamecocks remain ahead.
The Gamecocks ended the quarter on a 6-0 run with the final two points coming from a Louisville turnover.
There have been seven lead changes and three ties in the game so far. Elif Istanbulluoglu has been dominant in the post with six points for the Cardinals.
Anaya Hardy will get her first career start for Louisville. Taj Roberts, Mackenly Randolph, Elif Istanbulluoglu and Laura Ziegler.
The Cardinals and Gamecocks are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. tonight at the KFC Yum! Center.
