Will temperatures be cold enough to close schools in Metro Detroit on Friday? What to know

DETROIT – Will temperatures be cold enough to close schools in Metro Detroit on Friday?
What we’re expecting
The 4Warn Weather team is expecting Friday to bring the coldest air of the season that we’ve felt so far.
We’re forecasting a low temperature of 7 degrees. The record low for Dec. 5 is 6 degrees, so there’s a chance we could break that record on Friday.
Wind chill temperatures across Metro Detroit are expected to be between zero and 10 below zero. Some areas could see wind chills a few degrees colder than that.
There could be a few snowflakes mixed in Friday night into Saturday morning, but the next truly impactful snowfall is looking like next Tuesday. It’s still too far out to get into specifics, so we’ll fine-tune that forecast over the next several days.
Will temperatures cancel school?
In short, no, we don’t expect Friday will be cold enough to cancel school based on temperatures alone.
The common threshold to close schools in Metro Detroit is if wind chill temperatures hit 20 below zero.
The 4Warn Weather team isn’t expecting temperatures to reach that low. Again, they will likely be around 10 below zero at the coldest.
Parents should make sure that children waiting for the bus are dressed appropriately for the temperatures. There’s a chance some schools could hold recess indoors, depending the temperatures at the time.
