Josh Hazlewood’s Ashes involvement under a cloud after fresh injury setback

Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood has suffered another injury setback, which casts doubt over his availability for the remainder of the Ashes series.

This masthead can reveal Hazlewood, who has been managing a hamstring injury he suffered during a Sheffield Shield match last month for NSW against Victoria, has picked up a fresh low-grade Achilles injury.

Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Friday. A timeline has not been set on Hazlewood’s return to play, but he is expected to be back bowling next week.

Hazlewood, who has been ruled out of the first two Tests against England, was supposed to travel to Brisbane to be with the Australian squad to continue his rehabilitation but this masthead can reveal the trip was cancelled due to the fresh injury. He will remain in Sydney for now.

The third Test against England begins on December 17 but there are concerns Hazlewood might not be available until the Boxing Day Test or beyond.

“Josh Hazlewood reported Achilles soreness this week during his rehabilitation from a recent hamstring injury,” a CA spokesperson said in statement. “It is a low-grade issue, and he is expected to recommence running and bowling next week.”

Hazlewood has been back bowling in the nets in recent weeks.
