GREENSBORO, N.C. — Parts of North Carolina are expected to see some sort of wintry mix Friday morning.

What You Need To Know

  • Greensboro and Winston-Salem are preparing for a possible wintry mix of precipitation Friday morning
  • Greensboro is starting 24-hour emergency operations to assess and clear roads
  • Crews in Winston-Salem have applied brine to bridges, overpasses and steep slope areas

“Being able to be pre-prepared is essential,” said Nathanael Moore, deputy director of the Greensboro Department of Transportation.

The city of Greensboro will start 24-hour emergency operations at midnight. Each 12-hour shift will include 125 people working on the ground. Crews will assess roads based on priority.

“Our priority ones are going to be our major thoroughfares, high-traffic-volume roads where we will get plowed and cleared first,” Moore said. “[Then] we’ll move on to our priority twos that are smaller collector roads and then into our residential areas.”

In Winston-Salem, crews started putting brine on bridges, overpasses and steep slope areas. As a precaution, city leaders say they plan for the worst when it comes to inclement weather.

“We don’t want to be caught unprepared,” said August Vernon, director of Winston-Salem Emergency Management. “You know, we want to keep the roads open. We want to keep people in school. We want to keep our businesses open, keep the community moving.”

No matter what amount of precipitation accumulates, crews are viewing this as a learning opportunity for future bad weather days.

“Every single time, [I know] there’s something that we can improve upon,” Moore said. “Something we can make better. That’s my goal, every time that we roll these trucks.”
