Salford vs Leyton Orient  preview

Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens was sacked by Salford in March 2021 but he could return to haunt his former club by steering the League One Londoners to victory in the FA Cup second round.

Salford’s owners ultimately decided that Wellens was not the right man to lead them to League Two promotion, but they have remained a fourth-tier side since and are only seventh in the latest standings with 29 points from 18 matches.

As a club with a desire to grow  quickly, Salford’s ambition has sometimes clashed with the need to show more patience with their managers.

However, the Ammies have taken a longer-term view in recent times with Karl Robinson now a month away from completing two years in the hotseat.

Robinson’s side have had an up-and-down season disturbed by a long injury list, and the absences of key defenders Michael Rose and Brandon Cooper were a factor in last Saturday’s chaotic 4-3 league success at home to Crawley.

Salford got away with some dreadful defending against the Red Devils, but they are much more likely to be punished by Orient, who are League One’s top scorers with 29 goals.

Orient started the season slowly, but they have piled up ten points from their last five games and their offensive quality should be too much for Salford, who could be beaten without need of extra-time or penalties.

Charlie Wellens to score at any time

Being the manager’s son doesn’t seem to faze the younger Wellens, who looks ready play a match-winning role.

Over 2.5 goals

Salford’s last two games have generated a combined tally of 16 goals and it’s not too much of a stretch to anticipate another entertaining, high-scoring outcome.

Most goals in the second half

A lack of staying power could cost Salford, who have conceded six second-half goals in the last two matches.
