Wayne Gretzky leaves fans baffled after mispronouncing names at World Cup draw

WAYNE Gretzky had a tough time pronouncing some of the countries competing at next summer’s World Cup.

The ice hockey legend was part of Friday’s draw in Washington DC.

Gretzky, 64, joined Tom Brady, Shaquille O’Neal and Aaron Judge on stage to draw the group stages.

And the hockey hall of famer’s struggles were noticed by fans tuning in.

One said, “Wayne Gretzky announcing the countries for the World Cup Groups is incredible.

“The names he has destroyed; North Mackadonia, Curacko, Turkia, Jore-Dan.”

Those nations that Gretzky was tasked with pronouncing were supposed to be North Macedonia, Curacao, Turkey and Jordan.

But the hockey legend was the talk of social media during Friday’s draw as he butchered the words.

Another fan posted, “The World Cup Group of Death is Wayne Gretzky and any country’s name he has to pronounce.”

And a third said, “The World Cup Group of Death is Wayne Gretzky and any country’s name he has to pronounce.”

While one more posted, “Wayne Gretzky’s pronunciations of Macedonia and Curacao will last for a LONG TIME on the internet.”

Gretzky was part of a star-studded event in the nation’s capital.

English Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand hosted the draw with the help of Gretzky, Brady, Shaq and Judge.

Before that, Kevin Hart and Heidi Klum were on stage to introduce the ceremony.

Fans complained about the “cringe” ceremony which seemingly lasted an age.

And President Donald Trump was presented with the first ever Fifa Peace Prize by Fifa President Gianni Infantino.
