Former Derby County boss Billy Davies has ruled himself out of contention for the Greenock Morton managerial role.

Currently serving as Cappielow’s Technical Head Coach, Davies is part of the interim management team but has expressed his wish not to be considered for the permanent position. The Morton board has received numerous applications and will commence the process of selecting their next manager shortly.

Dougie Imrie recently resigned as manager for Raith Rovers. While Davies is willing to assist in the short term, he has made it clear to club officials that he does not want to be in the running for the managerial post.

The ex-Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss had previously promised Imrie that he would not succeed him at Morton under any circumstances. He has stayed true to his word, informing Morton officials and players of his decision last week.

Davies is content to continue in his current role as Technical Head Coach at the club, reports the Daily Record.

However, Davies may consider a return to management in the future. The Cappielow board has already received several applications for the managerial role and is currently reviewing them.

The club has confirmed that Davies will be in charge of the next three matches, alongside Head of Youth and Emerging Talent Gary Millar, Goalkeeping Coach Jon Connolly and Academy coach Joe McKee. Davies will continue to perform his current role from the stands but will move to the dugout for Friday night’s game against Queen’s Park due to Millar’s suspension and to meet the requirement for someone on the bench to have the necessary coaching qualifications.

A statement from the club clarified: “As we look ahead to Friday night’s fixture against Queens Park, the club wishes to provide supporters with an update on our first-team management arrangements for the upcoming games. Billy Davies remains in his position as Technical Head Coach.

“He is currently overseeing first-team operations, leading the planning and delivery of training sessions throughout the week. He is being supported by Head of Youth and Emerging Talent Gary Millar, Goalkeeping Coach Jon Connolly and Academy Coach Joe McKee.

“This update comes during an exceptionally busy run of fixtures, with four matches in the space of two weeks. The first of these – a challenging cup tie away to Peterhead – saw the squad deliver a gritty and determined performance in difficult circumstances, and we extend our thanks to the players, coaching staff and fans for their efforts in helping to secure progression to the next round.

“Since the departure of Dougie Imrie, the club has received dozens of notes of interest in the managerial position. While we appreciate the strong level of interest, we remain committed to taking the appropriate time with this process, particularly given the quality of staff already in place.

“Billy will continue to oversee from the stands on match day, but will be in the technical area for Friday’s game with Queen’s Park, due to Gary Millar being unavailable after his weekend red card, and the club needs to have a coach with the specific coaching requirements.

“The current coaching structure will remain for at least the next three fixtures, after which we will provide supporters with a further update.”
