GTA 5 protagonist makes a surprise return in GTA Online update

The next GTA Online update will let players connect with an old friend: Grand Theft Auto 5 protagonist Michael De Santa. Rockstar Games revealed new details about Grand Theft Auto Online‘s A Safehouse in the Hills update on Friday, including the fact that an older, slightly crankier and still disaffected Michael will be at the heart of its story.
In fact, it appears that players will be neighbors with the De Santas, as Michael and his wife are shown welcoming the player to the neighborhood in A Safehouse in the Hills’ new trailer. And whatever criminal antics players get up to in the update’s new narrative, Michael will be a big part of it, much to players’ delight.
“SEEING MICHAEL AGAIN IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER,” reads one comment on A Safehouse in the Hills’ YouTube trailer. Some players are also realizing that Michael’s appearance in the update — now looking slightly older, with a little more gray in his hair — appears to further affirm Grand Theft Auto 5‘s “Deathwish” ending as canon, in which all three protagonists survive the events of that game. (Trevor and Franklin also appear elsewhere in GTA Online.)
“I love the way they reintroduce Michael so nonchalantly, as if this isn’t pretty much the first time since 2013 we actually see or hear about him,” says another GTA Online fan. “Dude can finally vent to someone that doesn’t talk back.”
A Safehouse in the Hills, arrives Dec. 10. The next update for GTA Online offers players a “painstakingly crafted palace in one of Los Santos’ most exclusive neighborhoods, complete with breathtaking views, the finest amenities, and countless ways to customize and make it your own.” The game’s new mansion properties will come with a virtual assistant, plus trophy cabinets to showcase their accomplishments, a private salon, animal kennels, a garage, and an optional private security detail, according to Rockstar.
GTA Online will also get new missions in which players are tasked with taking down a mass surveillance network, and plenty of new vehicles to drive, earn, steal, and destroy. More details on what’s included in A Safehouse in the Hills are available at Rockstar’s website.
A Safehouse in the Hills will be available on all currently supported GTA Online platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
