‘You asked, we listened’: NSW Premier makes huge announcement for Sydney beachgoers

‘Pondi’ Beach in Penrith will re-open for summer this Saturday, prompted by forecasts predicting temperatures will near 40C in western Sydney towards the end of the week.
NSW Premier Chris Minns confirmed on Tuesday the opening would be brought forward.
“You asked, we listened,” he said.
“Saturday is on track to be a scorcher so we’re bringing the opening forward a day for Penrith Beach.
“Just remember to slip, slap, seek, and slide.”
The announcement will come as a relief to western Sydney beachgoers, given temperatures there are set to soar in the coming days.
Temperatures are forecast to hit 36C on Thursday, 39C on Friday and the same on Saturday.
Sky News Weather Senior Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said Sydney is on a heating trend stretching from the west to the east.
“Saturday in the city, the Bureau’s forecast is 37 but there is a significant chance the city could be just as hot as the west if the sea breeze fails to reach the city itself,” Sharpe said.
“So, we could be up into the 40s for Sydney city itself before cooler weather arrives by Sunday.”
Penrith Beach will stay be open from 7am to 7pm in the peak of summer.
The third summer season will see brand new on-site amenities including shaded seating areas and outdoor showers following a $5.2 million investment from the Minns Labor Government.
‘Pondi’ beach has attracted more than 330,000 visitors since opening in December 2023.
The beach will again offer free water-safety programs, learn to swim and junior lifesavers workshops and water confidence education.
Member for Penrith Karen McKeown said Penrith Beach showcases the best of the west.
“Penrith Beach has quickly become a favourite spot for people right across Western Sydney, and this funding means families can keep enjoying it,” Ms McKeown said.
“It’s convenient, it’s free and it’s designed with accessibility and safety at its heart.
“Whether you’re coming for a swim, taking part in a water-safety program or simply enjoying a day out with the kids, Penrith Beach showcases the best of what our community offers.”
