‘Protecting Jared’: Andy Samberg & Jason Momoa Netflix Comedy Film Gears Up For Production

In July 2025, it was reported that Netflix had landed a “hot package” of a new action comedy headlined by an unlikely duo: Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa. Months later, Netflix has pulled the trigger on the project according to ProductionWeekly, scheduled it for an early 2026 production start, founds its director and given it a potential title: Protecting Jared.
When the project was announced, plot details weren’t revealed, but Deadline noted that the pitch had received offers from multiple studios and streamers.
The script comes from Rob Klein and John Solomon, both veterans of character-centric comedy who have long histories in television and film. Klein has written on shows like The Middle and American Dad, while Solomon’s credits span everything from Saturday Night Live to the cult favourite MacGruber and its Peacock series revival.
Steering their work on screen is director Ruben Fleischer, who broke out with Zombieland, went on to shape the first Venom, and has hopped genres with films such as 30 Minutes or Less and Gangster Squad.

Producers Ali Bell, Brian Andrew Mendoza, and Thomas Sibbett are tied to the project, with Rob Cowan on board as line producer.

“The two-hander action comedy, follows William Ikaika (Momoa), a Hawaiian security guard who is forced to defend both himself and Jared Bachman (Samberg), a despised tech billionaire when a dangerous kidnapping scheme erupts.”
Who are the cast members of Protecting Jared?
The only two confirmed cast members for Protecting Jared are Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa.
Andy Samberg will play Jared Bachman. Samberg has starred in a whole heap of Netflix projects, including America: The Motion Picture, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Never Have I Ever, Mulligan, and Master of None. Of course, he is best known for his work outside of Netflix as Jake Peralta in Brooklyn 99, a host on Saturday Night Live, one-third of the American comedy trio The Lonely Island, and much more.
Jason Mamoa will play William Ikaika. For Netflix, Mamoa has starred in films such as Sweet Girl and Slumberland. He is most well known for starring as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, in the former DCU, and as Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones.

In issue 1481 of Production Weekly, it was reported that filming will begin in Oahu, Hawaii, on February 17, 2026. Filming will run for a couple of months before ending on April 21, 2026.
Filming dates are subject to change. The release date of Protecting Jared will largely depend on post-production, but a 2027 release seems most likely.
