Leeds vs Liverpool preview

Leeds delivered their best performance of the season to overcome Chelsea on Wednesday and they can follow that by avoiding defeat against stuttering Liverpool, who are making an absolute mess of their title defence.

Barely a week goes by without mention of the pressure on the shoulders of Daniel Farke, but the case for the defence of the 49-year-old manager was strengthened considerably by his team’s midweek performance.

Farke has favoured a four-man defence for the majority of his time in the Leeds dugout, but he switched to a back three and two central strikers – Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha – for the second half of last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester City and his team noticeably improved.

The Yorkshire side were unrewarded at the Etihad despite bossing large parts of the second half but they went with the same tactical set-up against Chelsea and it worked a treat as they swept aside the Londoners.

Leeds looked nice and solid with Slovenian centre-back Bijol excelling and scoring on only his fourth league start of the season, but they also bossed the midfield and were a constant threat up front with Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin causing Chelsea all sorts of problems.

Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin had to go off with minor injuries but the standard of performance was maintained by Noah Okafor and Joel Piroe, who were effective off the bench.

Well before the end of the evening the Leeds crowd were firmly on board and their backing is going to be crucial as Farke’s side plot a path to top-flight survival.

There should be no shortage of backing from the stands for an early evening kick-off against Liverpool which will be seen as a great opportunity to add to the tally.

Liverpool were a team to be feared for the majority of last season but their air of invincibility has disappeared.

Arne Slot showed a willingness to adapt at West Ham last weekend by benching Mohamed Salah, bringing in Joe Gomez and releasing Dominik Szoboszlai to play in a more advanced position.

The strategy paid off with the Reds easing to a functional 2-0 triumph, but familiar frustration returned on Wednesday as Slot’s side laboured to a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland.

Perhaps the biggest midweek positive for Liverpool was a better performance from Florian Wirtz, who was involved in the equalising goal when his shot deflected off Nordi Mukiele and ended up in the net.

But Liverpool are getting nowhere near the level they attained for large parts of last season and their problems are set to persist with a either a draw or a loss in Yorkshire.

Ampadu could add to his card collection

Leeds bossed the midfield against Chelsea and owed a debt to Ethan Ampadu, who had an outstanding game. However, Ampadu plays on the edge at times and looks overpriced to increase his Premier League card count of four from 12 games.

Attack-minded hosts can prevail

Leeds have been involved in a series of exciting matches at Elland Road and their clash with Liverpool could be another classic contest. The Yorkshire side have scored multiple goals in three of their last five home games and they can bag another couple against Liverpool to secure a massive three points.

Leeds vs Liverpool Bet Builder

Anton Stach to score or assist

The 27-year-old has been one of Leeds’s most consistent performers and he could come up with a major moment this weekend.

Dominik Szoboszlai to commit over 1.5 fouls

Szoboszlai is joint-top of Liverpool’s Premier League foul count having been penalised 17 times. He could add at least a couple more amid the lively atmosphere at Elland Road.

Over 2.5 goals

Leeds like to get on the front foot in home games and their attacking approach should contribute to a high-scoring outcome.
