A New Flu Strain Is Affecting Disney World Travelers

A new strain of the flu has emerged just in time for the holiday season, leading some to reconsider their travel plans to Disney World.

According to The Hill, the CDC has said that the new strain is a variation of influenza A. The outline goes on to explain that, “technically, it’s called the K subclade of influenza A’s H3N2 subtype, and it makes up a majority of the H3N2 cases we’re seeing right now.”

According to experts, this new strain could lead to a massive spike in cases this winter. As Asefeh Faraz Covelli, an associate professor at the George Washington University School of Nursing, put it, “I think we’re going to see a really severe season.”

The strain, which has been particularly affecting young people according to the agency, features similar symptoms to common variations of the flu, including fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. However, they may be more pronounced than typical.

Well, while there’s no way to completely safeguard oneself from catching the flu, there are precautions that can be taken to try and remain healthy at the resort. They include:

  • Get the most up-to-date flu vaccine before your trip.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly (in other words, use soap and running water and scrub your hands together for at least 20 seconds) and often.
  • Cover your mouth and nose while coughing.
  • Do your best to avoid other visibly ill people if possible.
  • Keep your hands away from your face until you’re able to wash your hands.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
  • Bring a travel health kit with you, packed with hand sanitizer, tissues, sanitizing wipes, and medication.
