Ruth Negga, Aubrey Plaza, and Paapa Essiedu Join Michael B. Jordan’s ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ Cast at Amazon MGM Studios

In a significant casting update, Ruth Negga, Aubrey Plaza, and Paapa Essiedu have joined the ensemble of Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair” at Amazon MGM Studios. This talented trio will share the screen with actors Kenneth Branagh, Adria Arjona, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, and Aiysha Hart. Jordan, who is not only directing but also producing and co-writing the film, will star as the protagonist, a character involved in a high-stakes heist.

Jordan recently discussed this exciting development in a new interview with Variety, revealing that he had just returned from the UK. He expressed that the 1999 remake directed by John McTiernan, featuring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, has greatly influenced his vision for the new film, more so than the original 1968 version directed by Norman Jewison. As a child, he was captivated by the slickness and artistic elements of the 1999 film, which provided him a unique perspective of New York that he hadn’t experienced firsthand.

Reflecting on his early exposure to art through his mother, who is an artist, Jordan noted how these formative experiences shaped his aesthetic sensibilities. When MGM approached him about his next project after the success of “Creed,” he immediately vocalized his desire to tackle “The Thomas Crown Affair,” seeing it as a fresh canvas devoid of excessive baggage or high expectations typical of major franchises.

He emphasized his intention to deliver a reimagined story rather than a straightforward reboot. The prior films focused on affluent white males stealing for sport, a narrative that feels outdated in today’s context. In contrast, the new iteration promises to infuse personal stakes and deeper emotional themes, retaining elements of fashion and romance that fans expect. Jordan praised costume designer Ruth E. Carter as “the queen” of the project, highlighting the film’s commitment to a visually striking aesthetic.

The screenplay for the film comes from Drew Pearce, known for his work on “Iron Man 3,” “The Fall Guy,” and “Hotel Artemis,” while cinematography is led by Bradford Young, whose previous credits include “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Arrival.” Production wrapped recently, setting the stage for a theatrical release scheduled for March 5, 2027.
