Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died following an officer involved shooting at Danforth Go station early Saturday morning, said Toronto police.

Officers responded to reports of a man with a gun at Danforth GO station around 1:08 a.m. Saturday, said police in an email to CBC News.

A “person of interest” was located by police in a stairwell leading to a train platform, said SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon.

One officer shot the man multiple times during “an interaction,” she said, adding he was later pronounced dead in hospital.

SIU investigators retrieved one police firearm and another believed to be owned by the man.

Hudon said there were four witness officers at the scene at the time of the shooting.

Officers have not yet determined the man’s identity. It is still too early in the investigation to determine what led to the shooting, said Hudon.

The Danforth GO Station remains closed and Lakeshore East trains will continue to bypass the station, according to the GO Transit website.

The president and director of the Toronto Police Association (TPA) attended the scene to support officers after the incident, said the TPA on social media.

“No police officer starts their shift wanting or intending to use force,” it said.

“But when the public calls, they respond to dangerous, unpredictable situations and make split second decisions in order to keep everyone safe, including themselves.”
