Apple TV Reveals Surprising Fate Of Seth Rogen’s Platonic

Platonic‘s fate has been revealed at Apple TV. Premiering in May 2023, with Francesca Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller as creators, the show stars executive producers and former Neighbors co-stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as Will and Sylvia, two old friends who reconnect and reignite their sometimes destructive tendencies.

With a supporting cast that includes Luke Macfarlane, Tre Hale, Andrew Lopez, and Carla Gallo, Platonic season 2 premiered in August and concluded in October. The relatively quiet finale teased a new chapter for the two main characters. But in an overall understated ending, it seemed like the acclaimed comedy could have easily concluded on that note.

That is not the case, with Deadline reporting that Apple TV has officially renewed Platonic for season 3. Stoller and Delbanco express their excitement about returning to the world of the show, praising Byrne, Rogen, Sony, and Apple as they look ahead to continuing the series. Matt Cherniss, Apple TV’s head of programming, echoed those remarks. Read their statements below:

Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco: “We couldn’t be more excited to get back into the world of Platonic with our amazing partners, Rose and Seth and Sony and Apple.”

Matt Cherniss: “Platonic is proof there is no duo better at making us belly laugh at mid-life crises than Seth and Rose… can’t wait to see what they cook up for season three.”

Platonic season 2 was produced by Sony Pictures Television, where Stoller’s Global Solutions has an overall deal, in addition to Byrne, Stoller, Delbanco, and Conor Welch as executive producers, along with Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver for Point Grey Pictures. It returned to Sylvia and Will as they faced new challenges. Will’s wedding did not go as he planned, while Sylvia faced some professional and personal trouble.

Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen look on in Platonic

This was underlined by the fact that Sylvia’s normally reliable husband, Charlie (Macfarlane), stepped away from his job as a lawyer to focus on becoming an author. Charlie’s new job allowed for Byrne’s real-life husband, two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, to appear in a recurring dream sequence involving Charlie.

Platonic season 2 sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 28 reviews, with an audience score of 83%.

Continuing its streak as one of the most underrated comedies on television, Platonic season 2 ended with the preview that Will and Sylvia could go into business together as a way of getting around a non-compete clause that’s forced on Will. It’s one of several streaming ventures for Rogen and Byrne, both of whom have significant relationships with Apple TV.

Rogen is the lead star and creative force behind the buzzy showbiz satire The Studio, while Byrne garnered acclaim for her three-season performance on Physical. But for Platonic, which was considered as an anthology, its quiet endings have so far made the show’s renewal announcements a pleasant surprise.
