Chicago PD star joins cast of new FX drama after leaving NBC drama

FX’s newest series has officially landed a member of the One Chicago franchise to lead the cast of its newest limited series.
As first reported by Deadline, Chicago PD alum Shawn Hatosy has joined the cast of Cry Wolf, a new limited series from Sarah Treem from FX Productions. Hatosy joins what is shaping up to be an all-star cast which also includes Brie Larson and Olivia Colman.
The series is inspired by the Danish series which centers around social worker Kath (Colman) and mother April, who are thrust into a crisis when April’s daughter Mia alleges abuse at the hands of her stepfather (Hatosy). The psychological family thriller explores how the allegation pushes the two women to their limits as they navigate what’s best described as an impossible situation.
Cry Wolf is the latest project for Hatosy following a one-season arc on Chicago PD playing Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, and he’s having quite a run hot off the heels of his time on the show.
Hatosy took home the Emmy for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series this September for his role as Dr. Jack Abbot in The Pitt. Following his guest stint in the first season of HBO Max’s Emmy-winning medical drama, Hatosy will return for the show’s second season, which premieres on January 8, 2026.
We’re not at all surprised Hatosy has been riding a career high as he’s one of the most underrated actors in the industry. His Chicago PD arc was one of the show’s standouts, and he played an incredible foil to Jason Beghe’s Sergeant Hank Voight. The fact that his run on the show only lasted nine episodes feels almost criminal, but perhaps that’s the beauty of his role.
In just nine episodes, he gave us one of Chicago PD’s greatest villains, which is why we wish we’d gotten more time with the character. Captivating villains like Deputy Chief Reid don’t come around every day, and we would have loved to have gotten to see more of Hatosy in the One Chicago franchise before his time came to an end in the season 12 finale.
While we understand limiting the run for the character, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t wish the show had kept his character alive. This could have opened the door for Hatosy to make future appearances, and reignite the tension between Deputy Chief Reid and Voight. Sure, there’s always a chance he could pop up down the line to haunt Voight as a ghost of his past, but the odds seem unlikely, which is a shame.
