UNI women’s basketball: Panthers pick up the program’s first victory over Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio — UNI women’s basketball returned to non-conference action with a matchup at Toledo in Ohio. The Panthers and the Rockets battled even through the first half, but the Cats turned it on in the second half and put away Toledo with a 23-point fourth quarter to take home their fourth victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rockets got on the board first with an early three-pointer before an 8-2 run from the Panthers put UNI in the driver’s seat just under halfway through the first quarter. Bri Robinson accounted for four of the eight Panther points including a pair at the free-throw line. A six-point run from Toledo gave the Rockets an 11-8 lead heading into the media timeout before Kaylynn Janes knocked down the lone bucket the rest of the way out of the break from beyond the arc to tie the game at 11 apiece after 10 minutes of play.
Toledo was the first to score in the second quarter on a jumper before six points from UNI gave the Panthers an early 17-13 lead in the second. The teams battled back-and-forth down the stretch of the quarter, but the Panthers notched the final six points of the frame. The final four points came from Ryley Goebel and proved to be the difference maker in the first half as UNI held a four-point lead heading into halftime with a 27-23 advantage.
Four Panthers led the first half scoring as Elise Jaeger, Taryn Wharton, Bri Robinson, and Ryley Goebel each scored six points in the first 20 minutes. Jaeger and Goebel tallied four rebounds a piece in the first half while Robinson picked up a pair of assists.
Out of halftime, the Panthers extended their lead to nine points with a 6-1 run including a three-pointer from Kaylynn Janes and three points from Ryley Goebel. A seven-point run from the Rockets cut it to a one-possession game before UNI pushed the lead back to eight with six points, including four from the charity stripe. Toledo edged out the Panthers in the final minutes of the third quarter with a 7-6 advantage, but still trailed by seven points heading into the final frame down 45-38.
The Panther offense dominated the fourth quarter with a 23-14 advantage in the 10 minutes. The Panthers shot 62.5% from the floor and 60% from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter to shut the door on Toledo. The frame included a 12-point run from the Panthers which saw five points from both Jenna Twedt and Kaylynn Janes. UNI closed out the matchup with a 16-point victory and a 68-52 final.
Ryley Goebel led the Panther offense with 17 points. She added six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Taryn Wharton, Kaylynn Janes, Elise Jaeger, and Jenna Twedt all crossed the double-digit mark with 11, 11, 10, and 10 points respectively. Jaeger added a game-high 10 boards as well as a block and a steal. Wharton dished out six assists.

- UNI improved to 4-4 on the season and picked up its first victory over Toledo in program history inside Savage Arena in Ohio.
- The Panthers handed Toledo just its eighth loss in five years with the 68-52 victory.
- UNI continued an active program-record 554-game three-pointer streak with six triples against Toledo.
- Elise Jaeger picked up her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
- Abby Tuttle recorded a career-high two assists.
- Bri Robinson tied a career-high with six rebounds.
- Kaylynn Janes tied career-highs with 11 points, four field goals, three three-pointers, two rebounds, and one assist.
