Nets provide injury update on Cam Thomas’ left hamstring rehab

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has been out of action since Nov. 5 when he suffered his left hamstring strain in a 112-103 win at the Indiana Pacers. Brooklyn announced on Nov. 7 that Thomas would be reevaluated in 3-to-4 weeks from that announcement and after what seemed longer than one month, the Nets finally have an update on Thomas

Brooklyn’s announcement stated that Thomas was “reevaluated earlier this week. The MRI showed progress in the healing of the hamstring. Thomas has begun on-court work and will have his status updated in approximately 2 weeks.” While the report means that Thomas will be out of the lineup for the next two weeks, it also means that he is progressing in his rehab given that he has began on-court workouts.

“Right now, he’s starting to do some basketball workouts. It’s one-on-zero. It’s never been with teammates or opposition,” Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said prior to Saturday’s matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. “We’re happy with how he’s progressing. We have another timeline, which is two weeks. That’s pretty much it. There’s no reading in-between. We’re happy with the progress. There’s been improvement. In two weeks, we’ll see where he’s at.”

Thomas, 24, is averaging 21.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 40.2% from the field and 35.6% from behind the three-point line in eight games played. With Thomas on the floor alongside forward Michael Porter Jr., the Nets at least had a duo that could put the offense on their back and draw enough attention from the opposing defense to create opportunities for the rest of the team.

However, the Nets will have to move forward knowing that Thomas will be out of action for at least the next two weeks and the hope is that he will be able to return after that time has passed. In the meantime, Porter, Brooklyn’s leading scorer at 25.3 points per game, will have to continue picking up the slack on the offensive end of the floor if the team is going to be competitive.
