Wilfried Nancy faces a baptism of fire in his first game as Celtic manager against the Hoops’ biggest title challengers Hearts.
The visiting Jambos were eight points clear at the top following a statement 3-1 win over the champions at Tynecastle in late October, a loss which signalled the end of Brendan Rodgers’ second spell in charge of Celtic.
The Bhoys were in disarray after their defeat in Edinburgh but the return of Martin O’Neill as caretaker manager has helped steady the ship. At the same time, Hearts’ dream start has begun to evaporate.
Derek McInnes’s visitors have won just one of their six league outings since beating Celtic, drawing four times and losing for the first time this season, a 1-0 reverse at Aberdeen.
Goals that had been easy to come by in the opening months of the campaign have dried up badly for Hearts, allowing Celtic to claw their way back into the title picture and move level on points with the added bonus of a game in hand.
It’s not all doom and gloom for the leaders, though. The appointment of any manager usually means leads to some adjustment, especially midway through a season, and Celtic are also struggling with injuries.
Prevent goals from set-pieces has also been a weakness of the champions this season – and it is an area Hearts are well equipped to take advantage. Indeed, no Premiership side has scored more goals from dead-ball situations than the Jambos’ nine.
Nancy favours a 3-4-2-1 system but he has had only four days to implement his ideas, so it will be interesting to see how much he has changed in such a short period of time.
Columbus Crew were known for their forward-thinking approach under Nancy and, in time, Celtic should also become a dynamic attacking outfit.
Hearts are top scorers in the league this season, scoring 30 goals in 15 games, and they can make a mark at Celtic Park, but the title impetus is firmly with the Glasgow hosts, who can deliver Nancy a dream start.
