ICYMI: Poor Stokes captured on video, sound up

Not all reactions have been kind

By Andrew Wu

The crowd can be unforgiving sometimes. As soon as Ben Stokes clutched at his groin, making it apparent he had been hit where it hurts most, the Gabba crowd cheered in unison. It’s taken Stokes a few minutes to regather his thoughts. That delivery from Michael Neser jagged back sharply into the left-hander.

Ouch! Stokes cops a ball in his nether regions

That is brutal. You can see Stokes wincing as he falls to his knees, and a close-up replay shows it’s got him flush. I cannot imagine the pain, but it’s clear from the reactions of the other players and some blokes in the stands that there are others who very much can.

Chance! Head drops

Doggett returns to the attack and Jacks takes him on, slashing but not connecting. Then he does, and sends it straight to short leg where Head tries for quick hands to take it but just gets hit instead. He had very little reaction time – 0.28 seconds according to the broadcast – but did almost get there. Tough to swallow as it’s one of very few chances today.

England 6-211: Stokes 42 Jacks 35, England lead by 34 runs

Wu has lots more detail on that statistic

By Andrew Wu

This partnership of 81 off 189 balls between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks is England’s slowest in the Bazball era (minimum 50 runs), at a rate of 2.52 runs per over.

The previous slowest was between Joe Root and Ben Foakes, who put on 113 runs off 261 balls (2.59 rpo) against India in Ranchi in 2024.

This has been England’s most settled phase with the bat all series, and it’s come when they have played in a manner suiting the conditions and match situation.

What would a storm do to this match?

It’s not clear whether the half-hearted forecast (little lightning picture, 50 per cent chance of at least 0mm) means Brisbane will get one this evening but if it happens, this session would be Australia’s best chance to wrap this up. Wondering what England would deem an acceptable total here as well?

Just heard this stat btw: England’s 59 runs from 24 overs in the first session is the fewest scored in a session during the Stokes-McCullum era.

STILL no wicket

Green is bowling again

And Jacks clips him for four. It’s a clever shot, too. Moves his body to cater for the ball angling in and picks the gap near mid-on. Another single for Stokes and Jacks apiece for a six-run over that brings England’s lead to 24 runs.

Starc is on the run-in to start the 60th over

It comes in full and Jacks almost rolls the ball to mid-wicket. Looked like he wanted more out of that and wanted that more to end up at cover. Jacks drives the second ball, but he’s not happy with his bat. Looks like he cracked the handle on that first ball. Slight delay as a new bat is brought to him. Then he takes a single from a short-of-length delivery, and lets Stokes handle the rest. The latter takes one too.

England 6-195: Stokes 37 Jacks 26

Ready to go again?

Good, because the players are back out for the next session.
