Simon Jordan delivers verdict on Sheffield Wednesday after takeover bid

Simon Jordan has been there and seen it all when it comes to owning a football club.

He spent 10 years as the owner of his boyhood club, Crystal Palace, helping them into the Premier League.

Last week, it emerged that Jordan had led a consortium to potentially buy Wednesday before eventually walking away over the numbers.

Jordan has long advocated for Wednesday, and it’s somewhat sad that he’s now decided to walk away from potentially buying the football club.

Ryan Howsam, a Sheffield-born entrepreneur, was part of the consortium, and now Jordan has taken to X to speak about his failed Wednesday takeover.

Simon Jordan delivers Wednesday verdict

Howsam was the man who bonded with Jordan to have a look at the financials at Sheffield Wednesday ahead of a possible takeover bid.

Jordan wasn’t happy with the concept of paying close to £20 million to former owner Dejphon Chansiri, with the TalkSPORT pundit suggesting it would be rewarding failure.

Ultimately, the numbers didn’t align for Jordan and Howsam, and they both decided to walk away from proceedings without making a formal offer for the club.

Howsam currently has a majority equity share of the Legends Tour, a world-renowned golf tour that features a number of tournaments involving the game’s iconic figures.

Jordan has hailed Howsam and also delivered a verdict on Wednesday and what he thinks will happen going forward.

He posted on X: “Ryan Howsam is one of the best UK entrepreneurs, a fabulous businessman.

“Football is a very different business, and whilst I have endlessly advocated for #SWFC, a deal has to be right, and this one was beginning to not be.

“That said, I think #SWFC will be fine…”

Wednesday takeover needs sorting quickly

The 2025/26 campaign is now all about pride with the Owls rooted to the bottom of the Championship on -10 points.

However, it’s imperative that things can get finalised on the takeover front to allow for the powers that be to devise a comprehensive recruitment plan ready for next season.

A club the size of Sheffield Wednesday should be among the favourites to win promotion from the third tier, but it will depend on the business that can be done in the market.

The uncertainty is doing absolutely nobody any favours whatsoever, and it’s perhaps a small concern that someone with the business acumen of Jordan and Howsam have chosen to walk away.

Still, all is not lost, and with a number of interested parties, the onus is now on the administrators to choose the preferred bidders in a timely manner.
