Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard talks Matt Campbell, Jimmy Rogers
Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard met with media after Matt Campbell’s departure and the hiring of Jimmy Rogers to be the new head coach.
College football prognosticators had Iowa State football going here, there and everywhere in their bowl-game projections.
Sunday morning’s latest predictions had the Cyclones going to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, the Independence Bowl in Shreveport and the Rate Bowl in Phoenix, just to name three.
In the end, those projections didn’t matter. The Cyclones athletics department announced Sunday morning that the team will not play in a bowl game in the wake of coach Matt Campbell’s departure.
See below for how things unfolded this morning.
10:55 a.m.: Iowa State confirms it will not play in a bowl game
News release from Iowa State:
Iowa State University has notified the Big 12 Conference that the Cyclone football team will not be participating in a bowl game, school officials announced today.
Members of the athletics administrative team and the previous coaching staff met with the players this morning and had a robust discussion about the team’s ability to play in a postseason bowl game. After that discussion, the players voted not to play in a postseason game due to the lack of healthy players to safely practice and play.
“The administrative staff and coaches respect and support the players decision,” said ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. “Our student-athletes have had an incredible season and we are grateful for their leadership as we worked through this process with them today.”
Iowa State concluded the 2024 football season with an 8-4 record.

National football writer Brett McMurphy of On3 is reporting that Iowa State has declined a bowl bid in the wake of Matt Campbell’s departure to Penn State. The Cyclones could be subject to a fine from the Big 12 Conference, McMurphy writes.
