I’m A Celebrity star Tom Read Wilson’s mum has insisted that ‘it’s real’ as she revealed the origin of her Celeb Go Dating son’s accent which has gone down a storm with viewers of the ITV reality show.

The E4 reality dating series receptionist, who meets a host of famous faces attempting to find love with one another, is one of the most popular campmates on the annual Ant and Dec programme.

I’m A Celebrity viewers were introduced to Tom after the series got underway when he arrived alongside Irish TV presenter Vogue Williams as the two late arrivals. Tom quickly made an impression on those watching at home.

With lots of clips of him in the Australian jungle going viral on social media, Tom has won a new legion of fans through his one of a kind accent, impressions and hilarious reactions during Bushtucker trials.

On Monday morning (December 1), Tom’s beloved mum Juliette joined Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard on This Morning to talk about how she’s found watching her son in the Australian jungle. While she didn’t know he was taking part until the last minute, Juliette travelled with Tom down under to wait for him as he takes on Bushtucker Trials and creepy crawlies.

“I didn’t find out from him, I found out from his sister and it was literally a week before he went. His sister rang me and said ‘have you heart about it’. I went ‘what’, she said ‘Tom’s going into the jungle’. Tom had been out filming and I thought he hadn’t told me he’d been filming.

“He called me and said ‘I have something to tell you mummy’, I went ‘I think I already know what it is Tom’. Then he said ‘actually do you want to come with me’ and I said I ‘can’t believe it’. It was wonderful, but very, very short notice,” she recalled.

Asked by Cat if she thought arriving late was ‘very difficult’ for Tom, Juliette replied: “I think he slotted in very well. He already knew Vogue a little bit before he went in, that must have settled him down a little bit. I thought he settled in very well and very quickly.”

Ben proceeded to point out that he’s been in Australia while I’m A Celebrity has been filming, noting that the contestants’ families get to enjoy a ‘lap of luxury’ as their loved ones endure camp life.

“It’s been absolutely dreadful, no it’s wonderful. We have the beach just across the road and the pools, it’s all complete luxury and not something I’m used to. I am lapping up every minute of it, it’s wonderful’.

With Ben saying he’s known Tom for ‘a long time’ and thinks he’s wonderful, the presenter told his mum that ‘lots of people have been struck by his accent’. Ben noted that some people have been wondering ‘if it’s real or not’.

Explaining Tom’s unique accent, Juliette said: “My husband and I, he’s an English teacher and I’m a teacher, he was born into good knowledge of Shakespeare and all sorts of things. He had a giant vocabulary very early on.

“Some people might say we’re posh, I don’t know where the accent comes from, but it is real and he does talk like that all the time. It came from a mixture of me and his father.”

One person who Tom has been getting on well with is American comedian Ruby Wax, with the pair even helping each during the live trial where they had to drink vile milkshakes. Having her say on the bond, Juliette told Ben and Cat: “It’s been incredible, it’s been so funny. Before Tom went in he said ‘I really hope I get on well with Ruby because I absolutely adore her, I really want to do my sonnets with her, have talks with her about plays and the theatre’.

“They’ve hit it off, which I absolutely love. It’s really nice because I’ve hit it off with Ruby’s husband as well, we’re all getting on really well. I’ve been hanging out with Shirley Kemp, who did all my glam this evening. Hanging out with Shona’s sister and everybody really, it’s really lovely.

“It will be nice to see when they get out that we’ve all gelled really well and bonded. They do seem to be having a wonderful time, when you’re in for that length of time, you can’t pretend after a while and end up being you. All the personalities are so different, but they’re all getting on really well.”
