Sydney to host giants of world football

Two of the biggest clubs in the English Premier League will feature in next year’s Sydney Super Cup, while Matildas star Sam Kerr will face some of her Aussie teammates with Chelsea locked in to take on the A-League Women All Stars.

The NSW government announced on Monday morning that Sydney would host Chelsea and Tottenham next year, with the EPL clubs joined by A-League Men’s sides Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

“This is an incredible moment for our members, fans and partners,” Wanderers chief executive Scott Hudson said.

“Playing Chelsea FC, the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions, for the very first time in our history is something our players, members, and the Western Sydney community will never forget.

“To host a team of Chelsea’s calibre on home soil, as part of the Sydney Super Cup, is a landmark occasion for Australian football and a chance for us to test ourselves against some of the best in the world. We can’t wait to make history together.”

The four-team tournament will be played at Accor Stadium and Allianz Stadium, with the government forecasting a $25m boost to the state’s economy.

The event kicks off with Chelsea taking on the Wanderers at Accor Stadium on July 29, before the EPL giants play Tottenham on August 1 at the same venue in an epic London derby.

Tottenham, who used to be coached by former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou, will then take on Sydney FC on August 5 at Allianz Stadium.

The Moore Park venue will then host a women’s blockbuster on August 12 with Kerr and fellow Aussie star Ellie Carpenter set to run out for Chelsea against the best talent from the A-League Women’s competition.

“Sydney has kicked another goal as Australia’s home of football, with two of the world’s best clubs coming to compete in the Sydney Super Cup 2026,” Minister for Jobs and Tourism and Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said.

“Alongside this blockbuster, we’re thrilled to announce a marquee women’s fixture. Chelsea FC Women will take on the Women’s A-League All Stars.

“These four matches will give visiting fans the chance an extended stay in our beautiful Harbour City, taking in our iconic natural attractions and vibrant cultural experiences in one of the world’s great sporting destinations.

“As we work towards our goal of a $91 billion visitor economy, major events like this are crucial – they help create memorable experiences that inspire visitors to stay longer, return again and explore more of our great state.”
