“Today, we honor and remember the more than 2,000 individuals who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor, including over 50 of Wisconsin’s own, and pay tribute to the heroism and valor exhibited by those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation that fateful day,” Evers said in a statement.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese aircraft bombed the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack killed 2,403 Americans, including more than 50 service members from Wisconsin, according to Evers’ executive order.

Congress officially designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in 1994.

“The attack on Pearl Harbor forever changed our nation and the trajectory of history, and today, we also extend our gratitude and respect to the WWII veterans who answered the call to serve in one of our nation’s darkest hours to protect and defend the freedoms and values we hold dear. Over 80 years later, we will never forget,” Evers’ statement read.
