Mineshaft opens in school run road in Beacon near Camborne

Buses, including school transport, are being diverted with residents told to use alternative routes

An essential route leading to Camborne has been shut for days after a sinkhole appeared in the middle of the road.

Pendarves Street in Beacon is currently closed between Tolcarne Road and Bekelege Drive after the hole appeared over the weekend.

School bus routes have been diverted, with a number of signs and barriers in place warning drivers and residents.

Cornwall Council believes the sinkhole, which is roughly 1ft wide, “has been caused by a mining feature”.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Highways crews have made the area safe and are carrying out detailed investigations to evaluate ground stability and to identify the extent of the mining feature.

“We appreciate this has and will cause inconvenience and frustration however, safety is our priority.”

They added: “Initial CCTV surveys have indicated a myriad of utility services underneath the road close to the site of the collapse and there is the potential that these services will need to be diverted before we can repair the road itself.

“While the road is closed, bus service 48 and 49 (Troon to Redruth, via Portreath) will start and terminate at Beacon Square. We are working with local bus operators to make alternative arrangements to access Troon and these arrangements will be confirmed shortly.

“School routes have been revised to operate around the closure.”

A notice on the Transport for Cornwall website dated ‘November 29 onwards’ reads: “We’re sorry to inform #GCB48 & #GCB49 will only go as far as Beacon Square where services will terminate.

“Services are unable to serve towards Troon because of a sinkhole. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but to circumstances beyond our control.”
