Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley receive Golden Globe nominations for Hamnet

Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley have been nominated for Golden Globe awards for their performances in Hamnet, while Irish author Maggie O’Farrell is nominated with Chloé Zhao for best screenplay for the film.

Kerry actor Buckley is nominated for a lead actress award for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare. Her fellow nominees are Jennifer Lawrence for  Die My Love, Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value, Julia Roberts for After the Hunt, Tessa Thompson for Hedda, and Eva Victor for Sorry, Baby.

Mescal, who rose to international fame as Connell in  Normal People in 2020, is nominated for best supporting actor for his role as William Shakespeare, facing competition from Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Sean Penn, Adam Sandler and Stellan Skarsgard. 

Del Toro and Penn are nominated for their roles in One Battle After Another, while Elordi has been nominated for his role in Frankenstein; Sandler for Jay Kelly; and Skarsgard for Sentimental Value.

Hamnet author Maggie O’Farrell, whose work on the film’s screenplay is nominated for a Golden Globe award.

Hamnet is the adaptation of O’Farrell’s book about William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes and will be in Irish cinemas next month. The screenplay was co-written by O’Farrell and director Zhao. 

Zhao has also been nominated for best director for her work on the adaptation. Her fellow nominees are Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another, Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Guillermo Del Toro for Frankenstein, Jafar Panahi for It Was Just An Accident, and Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value.

Hamnet is also nominated for best picture, along with Frankenstein, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Sinners.

In the comedy or musical best picture category, the nominees were Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, and One Battle After Another.

The best male actor in a drama film category saw Joel Edgerton nominated for Train Dreams, Oscar Isaac for Frankenstein, Dwayne Johnson for his role in The Smashing Machine, Michael B Jordan for Sinners, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, and Jeremy Allen White for Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere.

For best male actor in a comedy or musical film, Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for

One Battle After Another,

Timothee Chalamet for

Marty Supreme,

George Clooney for

Jay Kelly,

Ethan Hawke for

Blue Moon,

Lee Byung-Hun for

No Other Choice,

and Jesse Plemons for

Bugonia.

In the best female actor in a comedy or music film, Rose Byrne was nominated for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked: For Good, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, Chase Infiniti for One Battle After Another, Amanda Seyfried for The Testament Of Ann Lee, and Emma Stone for Bugonia.

Joining Wicked: For Good star Ariana Grande in the best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture category is Emily Blunt for her role in The Smashing Machine, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Amy Madigan for Weapons, and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.

The winners will be revealed during the 83rd Golden Globes ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, on January 11.
