Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan co-owned Kolkata Knight Riders are heading into the IPL 2026 mini auction on December 16 with the biggest purse of Rs 64.3 crore. They have released high profile cricketers like Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock but one of the 12 players they have retained is former West Indies T20 captain Rovman Powell.

He was bought for Rs 1.5 crore by Shah Rukh Khan’s KKR at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Powell only played in a couple of matches for KKR in IPL 2025 earlier this year but with Russell departing from the side, he can expect a much bigger role in IPL 2026 season.

Powell warmed up in style for the IPL 2026 but ironically against team owned by Shah Rukh Khan – Abu Dhabi Knight Riders – in the ILT20 2025 tournament. The West Indies all-rounder smashed 96 not out off 52 balls with four sixes and eight fours as Dubai Captials hammered ADKR by 83 runs in Dubai on Sunday.

The video of Rovman Powell’s blazing knock went viral on social media. Thanks to Powell’s 96 and Jordan Cox’s half-century, Dubai Capitals posted 186 for 4 in 20 overs after batting first.

Chasing 187 to win, the Knight Riders were bundled out for 103 runs in 15.3 overs as the Dubai Capitals marched home to a comfortable win. For ADKR, former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla – playing in his 300th T20 match – struck with his first ball to get rid of the USA batter Shayan Jahangir (14) to leave the Dubai Capitals reeling at 43 for three.

Cox and Powell took charged as they put on a massive 119-run partnership off only 76 balls. Powell smashed eight fours and four sixes in his innings and Cox hit four fours and one six in his half-century.

“I think the way we batted the spinners was key. They have two quality, world-class spinners, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla. When I went to bat, it was important that we fought them off and just kept ticking over, not playing too many dot balls. Once I did that, batting against the fast bowlers came naturally,” Powell said at the post-match presentation.

“Jordan Cox was very helpful. We just didn’t want to get stuck or become stagnant in the middle; we always wanted to turn over the strike. We didn’t want Narine or Chawla to keep bowling at one player. We wanted to rotate the strike, and we think that was our best way to bat two world-class spinners like them. When we were 10 overs down in our innings, they asked me what a good score was. I told them that it’s a good wicket, and 180 or 185 is a good score if we bowl properly and control the Powerplay. Having achieved that score, we were pretty comfortable at the halfway stage,” he added.

The Knight Riders were off to a shocking start as England all-rounder David Willey got rid of Alex Hales for a duck and Alishan Sharafu for 4 in the first over. Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman reduced the Knight Riders to 10 for 3 by dismissing former India batter Unmukt Chand for a golden duck.

Phil Salt (27 off 21) tried to keep his team in the game with a fighting innings but fell to Rahman with his side struggling at 44 for 4 at the end of the powerplay. Mohammed Nabi trapped Liam Livingstone (16 off 15) plumb in front of the wicket to bring Andre Russell (12 off 6) out in the middle.
