Coronation Street hides Easter egg in 65th anniversary special – but did you spot it?

Coronation Street spoilers follow from Monday’s episode (8 December), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube, but hasn’t yet aired on ITV1.

Coronation Street has hidden a surprise Easter egg in tonight’s episode, as a nod to the show’s milestone anniversary. This month marks an impressive 65 years of the ITV soap – but did you spot the small on-screen tribute?

Today’s edition opens with barmaid Glenda Shuttleworth jovially strolling to work while greeting her neighbours along the way. When she arrives outside The Rovers, landlord Ben Driscoll is hanging up a large birthday banner for his mum, Maggie.

The camera then switches to a shot of Brian Packham, setting up a poster outside The Kabin, boldly displaying the words “Florizel Street”.

Die-hard fans will know that Florizel Street was the original name for the soap, suggested by Corrie creator Tony Warren. The idea came from a picture he owned of fairytale character Prince Florizel valiantly slashing through a forest to reach Sleeping Beauty.

“Up until the week of our first show it was still known as Florizel Street,” Warren previously told The Northern Echo. “From the start many people involved with the show had their doubts about the title.

“But it was only when Agnes the tea lady said that Florizel sounded like a disinfectant that we came up with some alternatives.”

Meanwhile, the small Easter egg isn’t the only tribute to the soap’s anniversary, as tonight’s special episode centres around Maggie’s 65th birthday.

Pauline McLynn, who plays the matriarch, explained: “It is going to be a very big birthday. She’s 65, which is a nod to the show’s anniversary. The whole birthday thing is kind of a ‘Happy Birthday to the show’ element, too.”

But as the festivities kick off in The Rovers, Maggie experiences a dark flashback to her time as a young wife and mother of two. Throughout the special episode, viewers learn more about the Driscolls’ mysterious past, with some harrowing secrets set to be revealed.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
