Jean-Philippe Mateta put the Eagles into the lead in the first half on Sunday afternoon before United mounted a comeback against Crystal Palace after the break.

Bruno Fernandes lofted a dangerous ball from a free-kick and Joshua Zirkzee brought it down before he managed to squeeze his strike past Dean Henderson.

The United captain took advantage of another free-kick after he rolled the ball out to Mason Mount, who immediately struck a low long-range effort past Dean Henderson.

Ruben Amorim and Bruno Fernandes’ feelings about Mason Mount show the Man Utd No 7’s importance at Old Trafford

Mason Mount was called back to the starting XI under manager Ruben Amorim for Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in Sunday’s Premier League clash.

The 26-year-old ex-Chelsea ace had come off the bench last Monday for United’s shock defeat to 10-man Everton in the Premier League match at Old Trafford.

United were more assured with Mount in the attacking line-up against Palace, especially due to the absence of Matheus Cunha from the first-team squad.

Speaking ahead of the Red Devils’ win over the Eagles, United manager Amorim talked up why Mount is so important to his tactical system at the club.

“Mason Mount is really smart,” he said.

“He gives us more possession. He is intense and he can score goals, so is one more player to be near the box.”

Amorim is a big admirer of Mount and the 40-year-old former Sporting CP head coach has found incredible versatility with the United No 7’s attacking capabilities.

The United boss is not alone with his admiration for the former England international, with Bruno Fernandes also dropping high praise on Mount.

“Mason is a great player,” he told BBC’s Match of the Day after the match, as per BBC Sport.

“His quality was never in doubt with his teammates. Sometimes he struggled a bit for goals and assists and also with injuries, but when he gets his fitness, he is important.”

Bruno Fernandes shows the one Man Utd challenge for Mason Mount that Ruben Amorim failed to mention

Amorim was all about the praise for Mount in his pre-match remarks, but it is Fernandes who hit the nail on the head with the former Chelsea talent.

No matter how much Mount can impress United fans with his performances, the constant elephant in the room with the player is his track record at Old Trafford.

Mount’s entire United spell since his 2023 move from Chelsea has essentially been stop-start due to injuries and inability to complete consistent 90-minute matches.

The ex-Three Lions international’s chequered injury record is to the detriment of him enjoying a successful period at Old Trafford and for United fans to rely on him more.

However, Mount did see out the full 90 minutes against Palace and optimism is needed for the Red Devils player to overcome the final hurdle in his spell.

The final month of 2025 could be the turning point for the ex-England star if he can chalk up consistent 90-minute matches and prove his reliability to United fans.
