Is this the Premier League’s worst team ever? Wolves on track for unwanted record after yet another hiding

Hapless Wolverhampton Wanderers are on track for the worst season in Premier League history after slumping to a miserable 4-1 home loss against Manchester United on Tuesday (AEDT).

Wolves have collected just two points after 15 games with no wins, two draws and 13 losses.

Sheffield United’s 2020-21 team also had just two points from their first 15 games but their goal difference of -18 at that stage was much better than Wolves’ current -25.

Derby County’s class of 2007-08 hold the unwanted record for the worst Premier League season, picking up just 11 points in that campaign.

United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a goal in each half for the visitors while Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount also found the back of the net.

There was one reason to cheer for Wolves’ tortured fans, however, as Jean-Ricner Bellegarde scored the club’s first goal in 540 minutes.

Their last goal was scored in October – if you don’t include Yerson Mosquera’s own goal in the abject defeat at Fulham.

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira was sacked last month just 45 days after he signed a new three-year contract with the club.

Former Wolves player Rob Edwards is now at the helm and needs a miracle to avoid relegation.

Frustrated fans held a banner reading ‘Shi Out’ in reference to the club’s executive chairman Jeff Shi, Executive Chairman.

The win lifted United to sixth on the standings, behind fifth placed Chelsea on goal difference.

“Wolves are extremely poor, possibly as bad as we’ve ever seen in the Premier League,” England and Liverpool great Michael Owen said on Stan Sport’s coverage.

“It’s getting to that stage actually, you tot up the maths and whatever, they’re on course for five points if they continue the way they’re going. I mean that is shocking.

“Way too open there in the second half. In fact, after about two minutes of the second half, me and James (Tarkowski) were saying this could be four or five, the way they all of a sudden played a high line, looked like they were going to concede all the time.

“Manchester United, yeah, great result, lots of confidence. Scoring four goals is obviously a good thing, sharing the goals around a little bit as well. Three different goalscorers is good, but as you say, hard to really get a grasp on it because Wolves were so poor.

“But they can only do what they did, scoring four goals, getting the three points, league table looks quite pretty for them.”
