Trans Canada Highway to Close for Avalanche Control Between Revelstoke and Golden

REVELSTOKE, B.C. — A temporary closure of the Trans Canada Highway is set to take place from Revelstoke to Golden due to necessary avalanche control work. This closure will commence on Monday, December 8, starting at 3:00 p.m. In preparation for the closure, DriveBC has advised that commercial vehicles heading eastbound on Highway 1 will be halted in Malakwa beginning at 2:00 p.m.

For passenger vehicles, there is a designated bypass available via the frontage road, with detour signs posted to guide drivers around the affected stretch of highway. The estimated time for reopening Highway 1 east of Revelstoke is 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, although an update is scheduled for midnight to provide the latest information to travelers.

The need for this closure stems from significant safety concerns, as Avalanche Canada has issued a high avalanche danger rating for the region. According to their assessment, areas from Revelstoke to Golden are classified as Rank 4 on a scale of one to five at both the alpine and tree line levels. Below the tree line, the rating is slightly lower at Rank 3 for Monday.

Travelers are urged to stay informed through DriveBC and plan accordingly, especially those with commercial loads, to avoid delays and ensure safety on the roads.
