V Foundation’s annual Boo-Yah event series honoring Stuart Scott kicks off this week in NYC

NEW YORK — Stuart Scott, the late ESPN Sports Center anchor, continues to make an impact more than a decade after his death.

The Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund has awarded more than $22 million to 64 grantees to address disparities in cancer outcomes.

“The Stuart Scott Fund honors Stuart’s belief that everyone deserves a fair chance in the cancer fight,” said Dr. Susanna Greer, Ph.D.

Greer is the chief scientific officer for the V Foundation, which is named for famed coach Jimmy Valvano.

Stuart Scott’s foundation partners with the V Foundation. Its big fundraiser takes place this week with the annual Jimmy V basketball classic and Boo-Yah gala -a celebration of Stuart Scott.

“It supports researchers from underrepresented backgrounds and also research that tackles racial disparities and cancer outcomes,” Greer said.

This year, cancer survivor and former NFL pro Randy Moss will receive the first Stuart Scott Impact Award for his advocacy for early screening and fair access to care for minority communities.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death, but Scott’s mission empowers scientists working toward a cure.

“What keeps researchers going is the possibility of helping patients and families who desperately need better options, and we fund them through the V Foundation, we give them freedom, tools and confidence to keep pushing forward,” Greer said.
