Philip Rivers joining the Colts ruins Chargers’ retirement celebration

We all thought Philip Rivers’ time as an NFL quarterback was behind him, but that may not be the case.
With Daniel Jones out for the season, Anthony Richardson on injured reserve and Riley Leonard week-to-week with a knee injury, the desperate Indianapolis Colts are considering bringing Rivers, who is 44, out of retirement. They will work Rivers out on Tuesday ahead of his potential return.
Rivers would immediately become the NFL’s oldest quarterback, and his return could create an awkward situation with the Los Angeles Chargers, for whom Rivers played the bulk of his career from 2004-19. Over the summer, Rivers signaled that his retirement was permanent when he signed a one-day, honorary contract to retire as a member of the Chargers.
Now, that celebration from July could be rendered moot if Rivers ultimately signs a deal with the Colts as they look to save their season. Indianapolis started the year 7-1 but has lost its division lead after losing four of the last five.
Rivers could return to guide the Colts, who he played for in his last season in 2020, back to the playoffs. The only question: If he does, will he sign another honorary contract with Los Angeles?
