NWS warns of extreme cold sweeping into GA this weekend. What to know

Active winter weather pattern expected from Rockies to the Midwest

More bursts of cold air and snow are in store for millions of Americans over the coming week.

A surge of Arctic air is heading toward the eastern U.S., and Georgia could feel a sharp drop in temperatures later this week, according to the National Weather Service in Atlanta.

While it’s not yet certain how far into Georgia the cold will extend, forecasters say the region should stay alert, especially if you’ve got travel, outdoor plans, or temperature-sensitive pipes at home.

Here’s what we know.

How cold will it get this weekend in Georgia?

For north and central Georgia, expect overnight lows to drop into the teens and 20s, with daytime highs only reaching 30s and 40s.

What you should do now

NWS Atlanta says current data shows a strong cold-air mass but notes that “how far south cold air gets is still uncertain.”

That uncertainty means residents from central to southern Georgia should stay tuned to updated forecasts.

If you’re in Georgia, especially north or central parts, now’s a good time to prep:

  • Make sure pipes are protected or insulated
  • Keep an eye on local forecasts.
