VDOT urges drivers to stay off roads; VSP reports dozens of crashes through midday

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – The Virginia Department of Transportation is urging drivers to avoid traveling Monday evening and says icy roads are expected Tuesday morning.

“Refreeze will also occur where snow and ice melt on the pavement and then freeze again,” VDOT said. “Crews will continue to patrol and treat state-maintained roads with salt and sand.”

As of 8 p.m., the Virginia State Police has reported a total of 290 crashes throughout the state.

So far, there have been 20 injuries and zero fatalities. In Richmond, there have been 68 crashes, with 6 injuries.

Prince George County Fire reported a crash on the 10000 block of Old Stage Road. There was a head-on collision between a sedan and a pickup truck.

One person was taken to the hospital.
