Tesco has issued an urgent recall for a popular party food after the item was found to pose a “possible health risk” to some shoppers if consumed.

The supermarket announced it is recalling packs of six Aubergine Katsu Bao Buns due to the item potentially posing a health risk to shoppers with certain allergies. The festive party food was found to potentially contain milk and, as this ingredient was not mentioned on the product’s label, the item could pose a risk to shoppers with an allergy or intolerance to milk.

Milk is listed among the top food allergens in the UK and therefore is required to be highlighted in food labelling. As the ingredient was not listed on packs of Tesco’s six Aubergine Katsu Bao Buns, the supermarket has issued a recall for all packets of the item.

The recall includes all Tesco’s 258g packs of six Aubergine Katsu Bao Buns with use by dates up to and including December 13 2025.

Issuing a product recall notice, Tesco said: “If you have purchased the affected date code of the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents, please return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.”

Also issuing a notice on the recall, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) advised caution to any shoppers with an allergy or intolerance to milk who have purchased the product. They wrote: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk do not eat it. Instead return it to any Tesco store for a full refund. “

For further information on the recall shoppers are advised to contact Tesco’s contact page on the supermarket’s website. Tesco also confirmed no other of the retailer’s products are affected by the recall.

The recall of Tesco’s party food comes after Aldi also announced they would be recalling a Christmas-themed treat from their shelves. Aldi revealed last week it would be recalling its Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks after they were found to contain peanuts, which were not mentioned on the product’s label.

Due to the label of the item having not mentioned the presence of peanuts in the chocolate, Aldi asked shoppers to return the product to stores. Issuing a recall notice at the time, Aldi said: “We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.”
