Florida State, Mike Norvell Could Pursue Top-Tier Transfer Portal QB

Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles suffered through a rough 2025 college football season, which led to rumors about the head coach and his future with the program.

Despite all of the rumors, it seems like Florida State will move forward with Norvell leading the team into the 2026 season. However, he’ll begin next season on the hot seat and will need to produce a much better year in order to avoid being out of a job by this time next year.

When all was said and done, the Seminoles finished out the regular season with a 5-7 record. They weren’t even able to become bowl eligible. After the start of the year, that was a crushing disappointment.

Florida State will need to answer a few different questions this offseason. One of those questions will come at the quarterback position.

Thomas Castellanos has been denied a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Unless that gets overturned, the Seminoles might very well be in the market for a quarterback in the transfer portal.

Keeping that in mind, there is a potential transfer option that Florida State could strongly consider pursuing.

Sam Leavitt has decided to transfer away from Arizona State. He has instantly become the top quarterback on the transfer market. The Seminoles have also been linked as a potential destination for him.

Joe Cox of College Football HQ on SI has named Florida State as a top potential transfer portal destination for Leavitt.

“This one is a bit of a dark horse, but according to 247sports, Florida State was the first big school to offer Leavitt a scholarship back in his original recruiting days,” Cox wrote. “The Seminoles need offensive help like a dehydrated person needs a sports drink. Florida State has been down, but landing a QB like Leavitt could be a major step back.”

During the 2025 college football season, Leavitt played in seven games and completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,628 yards, 10 touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 306 yards and five scores. He threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 2024 and completed 61.7 percent of his pass attempts.

Of course, this is just an idea with no concrete reporting. The Seminoles could be a perfect destination and are certainly a team to watch, but there is no guarantee that Norvell and company will actually pursue him.
