Out or not out? No-ball controversy over Jasprit Bumrah’s 100th T20I wicket

Dewald Brevis was dismissed in a controversial moment during the first T20I between India and South Africa on Tuesday, December 9 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. On the second ball of the 10th over in the Proteas’ run-chase, Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 100th T20I wicket by removing Brevis, who scored 22 off 14 balls with three fours and a six.

Bumrah delivered a sharp back-of-a-length ball on off stump, and Brevis, late on the pull, ended up skying the ball. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav completed a simple catch at extra cover. The on-field umpire then checked whether the delivery was a legal one. While Brevis had already started walking off, replays suggested that Bumrah might have slightly overstepped. However, the third umpire deemed the ball legal, and the wicket stood.

India vs South Africa, 1st T20I Highlights

With this milestone, Bumrah became only the fifth bowler to claim 100 wickets across all three international formats, joining Shakib Al Hasan, Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

INDIA CRUSH SOUTH AFRICA

India delivered a dominant performance to beat South Africa by 101 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. After being sent in to bat, the hosts posted a competitive 175 for 6 on a surface that wasn’t the easiest for stroke-making. Hardik Pandya played a game-changing knock, smashing an unbeaten 59 off just 28 balls, with six fours and four sixes.

Contributions from Abhishek Sharma (17), Tilak Varma (26) and Axar Patel (23) helped stabilise the innings after three early wickets. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the South African bowlers with figures of 3 for 31.

In response, South Africa crumbled to 74 all out in just 12.3 overs — their lowest total in T20Is, going below the 87 they scored in Rajkot in 2022. Jasprit Bumrah reached the landmark of 100 T20I wickets and finished with tidy figures of 2 for 17.

Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy also picked up two wickets each, while Axar Patel excelled with 2 for 7. The visitors never recovered after Quinton de Kock fell for a duck in the opening over and continued to lose wickets in clusters throughout their chase.
