Major motorway closes after horror crash as road expected to be shut for hours

A MAJOR motorway has ground to a halt after a horror crash which has left the road closed for several hours.

The M6 in Warwickshire is at a standstill after a serious collision this evening between junction one for Rugby and junction two for Coventry.

Police officers are in attendance, said National Highways

A section of a key motorway in the UK has been shut following a serious collision

National Highways said they expect the northbound carriageway to remain closed for hours after the crash after police raced to the scene.

It added that officers are dealing with a “serious collision”.

A spokesperson said: “Emergency services including Warwickshire Police are in attendance.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

“Due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed for several hours”.

It added that drivers should take the diversion route following the Hollow Triangle road signs.

  • At M6 J1 take the exit to the A462 northbound.
  • Continue along the A426 to its junction with the A5.
  • Take the exit to A5 westbound and continue to its junction with the M69 J1. 
  • Take the exit to M69 southbound and continue to M6 J2.

The statement continued: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey. 

“Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed.”

Travellers should also be aware of weather warnings across the country as Storm Bram hits the UK throughout the night and into tomorrow morning.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to cause disruption across parts of the UK later on Monday and into Tuesday, the Met Office warned.

The forecaster issued an amber warning for Devon and Cornwall with torrential rain is expected.

Those in the southwest should brace for flooding in the early hours of Tuesday morning and travel disruption as heavy rain and strong southerly winds are set to wreak havoc.
