Tuesday’s EFL predictions
QPR and Birmingham are among a host of teams on the cusp of the top six in a congested Championship table and their televised meeting at Loftus Road could be all-out attack.
Just three points separates sixth-placed Stoke from Leicester in 14th ahead of this week’s double-header in the second tier and QPR and Birmingham are sandwiched in the middle, having both taken 28 points from 19 league matches.
The Hoops made it three wins in four with Saturday’s 3-1 success at home to West Brom while Birmingham went down by the same margin at Southampton, shedding fresh light on a weakness on the road which could scupper their quest for back-to-back promotions.
Being just as effective away from St Andrew’s as they are on their own patch is an area the ambitious Blues must improve as they have lost six of their last nine away games compared to six wins from nine in the West Midlands.
It also points to the Blues’ trip to the capital being entertaining.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has been a winning selection in QPR’s last five at Loftus Road while six of Birmingham’s last seven games have featured at least three goals.
Birmingham’s 3-1 loss at Southampton at the weekend featured 40 shots on goal and further suggests that both goalkeepers in west London could be in for a busy evening.
There are 26 more matches taking place across the EFL and Southampton could prove the bet of the night when they welcome West Brom to St Mary’s.
The Saints’ weekend win over Birmingham was their fifth win in six league outings, a run which has also seen them put five past Charlton at The Valley and cruise past Leicester 3-0 at home.
In contrast, Baggies have lost six on the spin away from Hawthorns and the pressure is building on manager Ryan Mason, who was strongly criticised for his team selection at Loftus Road.
Cambridge boast the best home record in League Two, taking 20 points from nine games with only one defeat, and their physical approach under Neil Harris can see them bully their way past Chesterfield.
Wins over Championship side Charlton in the EFL Cup and League One Luton in the EFL Trophy earlier this season hinted that Cambridge could be players in the fourth-tier promotion picture, and they gave another reminder of their quality when dumping Stockport out of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Chesterfield have won only two of their last nine away games and may succumb to a fourth defeat on the spin at the Abbey Stadium.
