Bayer Leverkusen vs Newcastle preview
Bayer Leverkusen capitalised on ten changes from Pep Guardiola to get the better of Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad on matchday five of the Champions League and they will be hoping to claim another Premier League scalp when Newcastle visit the BayArena.
There have been some teething problems for Leverkusen since manager Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid in the summer, with Erik ten Hag lasting just three games in charge, but Kasper Hjulmand appears to have steadied the ship despite them suffering back-to-back Bundesliga defeats.
Leverkusen have lost only four of their 18 games under Hjulmand and the victory at Manchester City shows their capabilities and makes it difficult to trust Newcastle as favourites given their frailties on the road.
The Magpies have won three of their five fixtures in this season’s Champions League but they failed in the two big tests, losing 2-1 at home to Barcelona before enduring the same fate in Marseille.
A 4-1 win at Everton in their last away game reads well but that was only a second road success in nine outings for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, who had lost at Brighton, West Ham and Brentford before going down at Marseille.
But one thing that can be expected from Newcastle is a threat going forward, especially with notable injuries of little concern, and their recent matches have been filled with entertainment.
Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals is a bet that has landed in Newcastle’s last six matches – the Magpies have scored at least twice in eight of their last 11 – and Leverkusen have a wealth of attacking options spearheaded by physical forward Patrik Schick.
Leverkusen’s Champions League campaign has featured a 7-2 dismantling at the hands of Paris St-Germain as well as score draws with Copenhagen and PSV, all of which helps support the case for another high-scoring clash involving Newcastle.
Eagerness to please could be costly for Kofane
Christian Kofane was shown a yellow in the victory at Manchester City, going into the book late on with his fourth foul of the game, and 19-year-old forward’s pressing from the front could come at the cost of another card against Newcastle.
The Cameroonian committed two fouls in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Augsburg after going on at half-time and he has been booked three times in just 458 minutes of Bundesliga action.
Magpies may not make the most of quick start
Newcastle have lost on four of their last five away trips and on three occasions, at West Ham, Brentford and Marseille, they took an early lead before their opponents came fighting back to snatch unlikely victories.
The Magpies love a fast start, having struck first in their last 11 matches, but they are not always able to see it out and Leverkusen may produce a dramatic fightback.
Bayer Leverkusen vs Newcastle Bet Builder
Newcastle to score in the first half
The Magpies have grabbed the first goal in each of their last 11 matches and could land the opening blow at the BayArena.
Christian Kofane to commit two or more fouls
Leverkusen’s young Cameroonian forward committed four fouls in a 2-0 win at Manchester City on matchday four and Newcastle’s Premier League quality could test him.
Anthony Gordon anytime goalscorer
The Newcastle winger has looked sharp since returning from injury, scoring in back-to-back games against Tottenham and Burnley, and has four goals in five Champions League appearances this season.
